My Thoughts

I cannot recommend this book enough. Now I finally have a book that I can give to friends, that I know will be truly useful to them. Because many of these techniques have already been so useful to me. I just never knew how to explain any of them to others. The author of Victory over Anxiety explains everything so simply and easily. She does not push the mantra of “Just pray your anxiety away” at all, which I greatly appreciated. Reducing your anxiety takes work. It’s you fighting a battle to reclaim your mind, using sound psychological and cognitive therapies.

I wish I’d known about this book back in 2018 when I began suffering mild general anxiety after my family suffered four tragedies in one year. But as I read through this book, I realized I’ve been doing a lot of these cognitive behavioral therapies and techniques already.

The biggest technique I want to emphasize, and what has helped me immensely, is the ability to take your thoughts captive and replace them with correct thinking. This is so incredibly vital and it is something I learned how to do simply by living out my walk with God for the last 20 years.

It is imperative, and if you haven’t made this a practice in your life, you should. In everything you do. It takes practice. It is not always easy. But when my mind is running away and spiraling in fear and I’m starting to feel anxious, I capture those thoughts and reframe them and replace them with God’s truths. I either replace them with realistic thoughts that are not based in fear or I begin quoting bible verses to myself. Dr. Andrea actually goes into detail of how to go about this process.

I have mild anxiety, which I want to emphasize, because if you suffer from severe anxiety, this process is much more difficult. That’s not to say it can’t be done.

The second most helpful advice I can give you is to practice self-awareness. Know your body. Know your triggers. Know your thought patterns. Knowing your body truly helps. I could write a whole post about this, but moving on…

Victory over Anxiety has a multitude of other therapies and exercises, including relaxation and meditation exercises, all of which can help you learn how to reduce your anxiety. These exercises and cognitive behavioral therapies are straight forward, and easy to understand, and can be utilized by Christians and non Christians alike. She does weave in scripture and biblical references and spiritual habits frequently which I appreciated.. It is a lot of information, but it is easy to understand.

This is a book I plan to share with friends. Thanks so much to Celebrate Lit, and to the author, for allowing me to read an advanced copy.

More from Dr. Andrea

I wrote Victory over Anxiety: Take your Anxious Thoughts Captive, as a path to my own healing. I have struggled with anxiety much of my life. As I researched the most effective techniques to combat my anxiety, and found how beneficial they were, I decided to write this book to help others learn practical tools, so they may also experience victory over anxiety. All the exercises I share are research based and filtered through a biblical perspective.

Not only will you learn everyday exercises to reduce your anxiety, but you will also begin to understand how and why your anxieties developed and how to rid yourself of those anxieties at their core. In addition, you can apply these principles to any emotional struggles, not just anxiety.
